King of Limbs
King of Limbs
The King of Limbs is reputedly more than a thousand years old, pre-dating the Norman conquest. ‘Safernoc’ (Savernake Forest) is referred to in King Athelstan’s charter of AD 934. I wonder which Saxon forester planted the acorn which foretold a thousand years of English history? Or was it simply the forgotten autumn hoard of a careless Jay? Either way this tree must have been revered over the generations, while periodically being utilised for its timber. I marvel at the sense of permanence, power and solidity of this giant at a time of such tumultuous change in our ever spinning world. The King of Limbs dances to the rhythm of the seasons and our earth’s relationship to the sun. I am comforted to be able to momentarily celebrate and share in that rhythm.
