This delicate native member the Lily family used to grow in great abundance in the wet meadows of the Thames Valley. Now rare and confined to only thirty meadows in England this white form occurs at Upper Waterhay in Wiltshire, owned by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. Populations of Snakeshead fritillary are normally dominated by the more common purple form of this species. In recent years some populations have become more threatened by the impacts of climate change and the permanent flooding of their floodplain meadow habitat in April when the plant normally flowers.
